September 30th is Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This was originally a grass-roots initiative by Indigenous Peoples, and was declared a national day in 2021.

Disability Pride Month
People celebrate disability pride in July because it was the month when the United States passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to protect the civil rights of disabled people. Northern Ireland released similar legislation in 1995. England, Wales and Scotland passed disability legislation in 2002. In Canada, each province has disability legislation, introduced from 2005 onwards.

Reasonable adjustments
…and unreasonable responses to them.
There’s a general pushback on diversity, equity, and inclusion right now, but even so, I find it startling to see some of the unreasonable arguments put forward for rolling back perfectly reasonable adjustments to help disabled people and neurodiverse people to be comfortable.

Red Dress Day
Red Dress Day is held every May 5th and is a national day of remembrance and activism honouring the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+). It started in 2010 with the REDress Project, which was created by Métis artist Jaime Black.

Black Organizations in Canada
History is a tapestry of many threads, some woven by individuals, some by groups. A lot of posts like this one focus on individuals, so I thought I would take a look at organizations. It turns out that there are a lot of them. Here are some that are nationwide in scope, supporting youth, developing Black businesses, or supporting Black queer people.

Lincoln Alexander Day
Today is Lincoln Alexander Day. He was a Canadian lawyer and politician who became the first Black Canadian to be a member of Parliament in the House of Commons, a federal Cabinet Minister, a Chair of the Worker’s Compensation Board of Ontario, and the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1985 to 1991.

Celebrating Persons Day
October 18 is Persons Day, commemorating the legal ruling in 1929 when Canada’s highest court of appeal ruled that the definition of persons included women. This meant that women could be appointed to public office, including the office of Senator. The ruling was an important step in paving the way towards gender equality.
