Microformats

Microformats are a way of marking up standardized data so that search engines, AI tools, and calendar tools can process it. Adding them to your site helps AI tools and search engines to rank your website higher in search results.

Some examples of where microformats are useful are:

  • Address data (street, district, city, postal code, country)
  • Calendar appointments (date, time, title, location, details, attendees)
  • Book details (title, author, publisher, publication date, ISBN)
  • Album/movie details (title, artist, publisher, release date, featured artists)

When you download a calendar appointment from your dentist’s website and upload it to the calendar application that you use, the microformats embedded in that data help the calendar application to ingest the data correctly, and match the details to the correct fields.

A related concept to microformats is the use of standardized field names and data types in web forms, so that you can select the values you entered in a form on another website, and your browser will expect a telephone number or an email address.
