A very close shave

We are a bit shaken up by the very lucky escape we just had. A bus lost control on the very slippery ice on the road outside our house, and took out our wooden porch and the trellis that was on the side of the house.

This is not supposed to be what the outside of your house looks like.

Bob was sitting on the couch under the window when we heard a crashing noise and the sound of broken glass. He got up and realized that a large shard of glass was poking through the curtains. The bus had slid down the hill, and crashed into the front porch and the pergola. The pergola smashed the window as it fell.

Very lucky that the curtains were closed as otherwise Bob could’ve got a shard of glass in the back of his head. Very lucky that the bus did not kill Bob. It was less than six feet away from him. I was screaming. Thank goodness he is safe.

Luckily the front door, the catio, and the new front windows are not broken.

One cat was on the couch by the stairs and ran into the kitchen, and the other cat was upstairs when it happened. It took me a while to find the other cat as she was hiding under the bed upstairs.

I was still shaking a bit even an hour later.

Only the driver plus two passengers were on the bus and they’re all fine. Kudos to the driver for managing to steer clear of the main part of the house.

I feel immense kinship with the guy in Norway who had a ship run aground mere yards from his house last year.

Johan Helberg poses next to his house and a 443-foot-long container ship by the shore in the Trondheimsfjord outside Byneset by Trondheim, Norway, on May 22, 2025, after the ship ran aground, almost hitting his house.

We were very impressed with the speedy response from the police and fire department and the bus company, all of whom came by within the first 30 minutes. We have also had a lot of support from friends. The community is truly amazing.

Here is a photo of the wreckage after the bus was removed. We are very lucky that it was just the trellis and the wooden external porch.
