Black Organizations in Canada

History is a tapestry of many threads, some woven by individuals, some by groups. A lot of posts like this one focus on individuals, so I thought I would take a look at organizations. It turns out that there are a lot of them. Here are some that are nationwide in scope, supporting youth, developing Black businesses, or supporting Black queer people.

Black Business And Professional Association

In 1983, the Black Business And Professional Association was founded to address equity and opportunity for the black community in economic development, employment, and business. The non-profit produces the annual BBPA Harry Jerome Awards, a national event that recognizes and honours excellence in achievement while also supporting higher education through its BBPA National Scholarship. Donate to the Black Business And Professional Association or learn more about the organization.

Black Opportunity Fund

As a community-led registered Canadian Charitable organization, Black Opportunity Fund’s mandate is twofold. First, they respond to long standing underinvestment in Black communities by facilitating access to capital for black-led businesses.

Second, they work nationally to strengthen collective actions by Black organizations and leaders through grants to black-led non-profits and charities who are leading initiatives that impact the quality of life in Canada’s Black communities.

Through their mandate, BOF challenges anti-black racism while supporting a prosperous, healthy, and thriving Black Canada.
